CAC's Work
Founded in 1976, Community Assistance Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in south Kansas City.
CAC's mission is to empower individuals and families to self-sufficiency through the delivery of direct emergency assistance, education and advocacy.
CAC feeds the hungry, provides clothing, prevents homelessness through emergency rent assistance, helps maintain utilities, provides basic hygiene and diapers, and connects clients to medical, mental health, legal, job, education and other resources whenever possible. In 2019 CAC has served more than 4,000 individuals, helping them to move from a crisis situation to stabilized. CAC also offers a holiday store, Thanksgiving and Christmas meal kits, computers for resume writing and job applications, and short-term case management, In 2020 CAC plans to offer life skills classes on credit repair, budgeting, working toward a GED and more .

Victoria calls CAC a blessing. When Victoria had, as she said, “More bills than money”, CAC was able to provide help with food and clothing. Now, as a participant in AARP’s training program for workers 55 and older, Victoria has come back to CAC as staff.
“Since Community Assistance Council was there for me, I asked to come to CAC because it made a difference in my life. Now I hope to make a difference for someone else.

Isabella came to CAC for diapers and food when she was between jobs. The single mom is back to work now,  but it’s still not always enough to make ends meet. She said food, diapers and clothing for her kids, especially in the winter months, help them become stable again. Now, Isabella donates food and clothing back to CAC if she can to, as she said, “Help other families in need like it helped me. CAC is a great resource.”

Sherry is a grandmother raising grandkids and helping other family members. When she needed help herself, CAC was there to provide food, clothing and diapers. But Sherry says she also appreciates that when she comes in to CAC she is coming to see people who care about her.
