In partnership with The Telegraph newspaper, CAC is launching an In From the Cold campaign to help with one of our current greatest needs - funds to provide temporary hotel rooms for families who have been evicted, or are homeless for various reasons. There is no homeless shelter in south Kansas City. And transportation to get to a downtown shelter in so difficult, IF there is room. Any funds collected for this purpose will be restricted for those currently homeless who we can help come In From the Cold.
CAC is the frontline of homelessness prevention in south Kansas City. Pandemic job losses have hit south Kansas City hard. Right now, we receive sometimes 80 phone calls a day from south Kansas City residents facing likely eviction or heat, light or water shut-offs. As the only emergency services agency located in south Kansas City, our goal is to help with rent assistance and other needs so families do not become homeless. But when they do, we need to be able to step in and offer a week of temporary emergency shelter.
CAC provides emergency rent, utilities assistance, food, diapers, hygiene items, medicine and medical devices, case management, life skills classes, referrals to other critical resources and much more. In 2020, CAC served 5.754 unduplicated individuals from 1,378 families. CAC serves all of Kansas City 85th street south, including all of the Hickman Mills and Center and the Kansas City part of Grandview School Districts. Every donated dollar stays in south Kansas City. Every dollar makes a difference.
