At Community Assistance Council right now, some days 20 families come to our building for food assistance. At least half of those are new to CAC and any kind of assistance.
At CAC so far, 20 families who have lost jobs to COVID-19 have called in for emergency rent or utilities assistance. Right now, families cannot be evicted and utilities cannot be shutoff. When that moratorium is lifted and three months of rent and utility bills come due, we expect the calls for emergency assistance to explode.
As the only emergency assistance agency in south Kansas City, in the best of times, CAC provides:
Emergency rent assistance that helps keep an average 15 families from becoming homeless each month.
Emergency utilities assistance that help keep about 20 families with heat, lights and running water – providing the most basic quality of life.
And food on the table for 135 families each month.
We are already seeing double the demand for food.
With no homeless shelter in south Kansas City and a higher than average eviction rate already, CAC is preparing for an unprecedented emergency rent assistance need and response.
Every family we can help avoid homelessness contributes long-term to children doing better in school, families staying healthier and a more stable community – when so much is unstable.
So we are putting out a call for help. Our May Day message. If you can, please help support Community Assistance Council during this critical time.
Every $1 can provide 3 meals.
